Undoing Apple’s meddling.

Why I’m compelled to undo things that Apple changes in their UI, I’m not really sure. I like getting new things, rather than having old things rehashed and resold to me. Click this thumb for 2 screenshots of the result.

I don’t really feel like explaining every little step I did, but I will share the links of the references I used I guess.

The Mac OS X Hint – Proof of Concept, and most of the instructions.
Anatomy of a PrefPane – to customize the icons.

Also having a 10.2 machine handy gives you access to the icons from 10.2 when these preferences were seperate. And finally, I don’t think this was mentioned in the hint above, hide the original prefpane by changing permissions by u-r, or to I think 355.

Also, obligatory warning, backup any files you change, and be careful! Whenever altering system files, it’s really easy to hose your system. Enjoy 🙂

Yay Apple.

Well I haven’t posted in a while, I’ll make a few entries about some semi-recent events tonight.

A couple weeks ago my hard drive (brand being IBM) made some strange sounds and some applications went crashing, so I called up AppleCare support, and they got a box sent to me like the next day. I sent out my powerbook on a Friday, and it was returned to me the following Tuesday. It got a new hard drive and mainboard put in, and I was very happy. Unfortunately though the battery is still deader than a door-nail. I’ll have to follow up with them when I have time next.

Laptopless :'(

The other day my powerbook’s hard drive told me it was dying (loud clicking sounds and lots of crashing), so I called AppleCare to get it repaired. Box came in yesterday, shipped it out today. 5-7 working days without it will be really crappy.

I’m now living with my 266MHz beige g3 computer and 15″ CRT screen which likes to turn everything yellow. It’s also doesn’t officially support OS X, but I did some workarounds to get OS X running on it, *VERY* slowly. I suppose it might be bearable if I did a CPU and a RAM upgrade, though the total cost might be cost prohibative. I really have no idea what I’m going to do here. BLAH!!!
